It’s been just over 4 months of mostly fun, and I’m done with this car. I can’t handle the bad luck and anxiety that comes with this thing.
Through the paint, just happened on my UNDER 3 MINUTE COMMUTE with literally no hint of what caused it. No sounds. No feelings of hitting something. Just saw it after I walked back out to it. So NOW what? Get quotes from a collision center, file a claim if it’s over my deductible, have a rental while it’s fixed, maybe spend fuck loads of money?
I already have to bring it back to the dealer after they damaged it 2 weeks ago. It’s got a rubber lip falling off under the nose. I just replaced the rear tires from a puncture. The amplifier was shot when I got it. The paint hasn’t been able to be completely cleaned/polished from bug residue after 3 attempts.
Honestly, I have no faith in this car anymore. I feel like it’s a lemon. I feel like it’s gonna be a money pit even worse than a used German car would be. I want out, and I know I’m gonna lose like $10,000-$15,000. But I want out.
I was already having second thoughts with all these other issues, and I test drove a BRZ this weekend. Think the Cayman got jealous? I could see myself in a BRZ....

This is why having a car that’s in decent condition is cool. The chips and whatnot are upsetting, but you can get over it.
I’d adore a pristine 90s NSX or 300ZX or something....but I don’t know if I could ever be happy with a pristine car. I’m too anal about condition. Pristine can
only
get worse. Every drive, every wash, every day the paint is worse than the previous day.

Show me a five-year-old car with some wound down it’s side and I’ll be drawn to that one every
time.

Thank you for this. I was honestly considering replacing the C30 with a Cayman but was slightly in favor of not. Now that needle is much further in the “bolt go faster stuff to the C30" range.

It already is 5 years old, with scratches and dents. I was happy about that because I never wanted to treat it like a garage queen or show car... But this is more than just character.

The precise reason I like buying used stuff. Someone else has already started doing damage, so somehow the rest feels less like my fault.

Is there actual damage, or just something scratched the paint deep enough?

Are you sure that boo-boo happened while you were driving it and not while it was parked?

No, but I parked next to a friend with a Focus ST and left before him. So not only would he show more care for both our cars, his car didn't move. Could be something else though.

I’m gonna lose like $10,000-$15,000
Please send to me.
Just kidding, but I am sorry to hear you are upset with this car. I know the feeling that you are feeling. My advise? stick it out, get it repaired. You’ll fall back in love.

It’s true. The 328 is the nicest newest car I’ve ever owned. But it’s also 7 years old and had its fair share of scratches. So when I find a new one it’s not heartbreaking.

I may lose that much, but with a cheaper car I'll save twice that over the years and chalk it up to an expensive lesson in not buying nice things.

I just bought a car today (on my way to pick it up) due to this reason. Post to come later.

None of the stuff you mentioned above sounds like the car’s fault that it deserves to be called a lemon, or even a trouble magnet. CoFL is right, breath deeply and stick it out. If you loved the car before, you will again.
If this damage really bothers you, and it would me so I understand , even paying for a repaint of the panel out of pocket is less expensive than ditching the car, and then all will be well again.

Yeah, but all this anxiety over this stuff just piling up and it continuing over the life of the car would kill me. Also, it just doesn’t feel like it’s worth what I’m paying for it anymore. Best car I’ve ever driven, hands down. Drives like a much more expensive car. But, and again I don’t need it to be show room quality at all, it just feels diminished in my eyes and heart now...

If the rocker panel has a plastic cover why not just pop it off and have a shop do a respray? I’m sure it can’t be that expensive.

If it we re just this issue I wouldn't be freaking out. It's the combination of all the stuff that keeps happening that's put a horrible taste in my mouth. But also, it's Porsche, it probably is super expensive especially with the gorgeous color I just loved so much.

No! I think my car is just bad luck. Everyone should have or at least drive a Cayman. They're pure fun and magic. Just hope mine is 1 in a million, and yours will be great!

I would get a rough quote, then weigh deciding about insurance. Find out if you report it if it will count as a ding or only if you ask for payment and how long you have to decide.
As for giving up on it, dont make that decision now, set a date in the future when you’ll be more level headed. When I saw my rear main seal leaking earlier this year I was pretty disappointed but now it’s fixed and it was just a blip on the radar.
Anyways, scratches, tires, crappy dealers, they happen with every car. I hope things turn around!

I feel you, really I do, but from a slightly different direction. I bought my K900 a year ago. I’ve never had something this fancy with this much power. It was used, sure, but you wouldn’t know it. Everything on it was pristine. In the first summer, I blew out two tires and marred the chrome wheels. I also ran the front end aground and shredded the engine shield under there. None of this was the car’s fault, but it sickened me just the same. I did end up putting in an insurance claim and paying a tidy sum in deductibles out of pocket to get it fixed. It hurt, but I needed to reverse the damage for my mental health, otherwise I couldn’t enjoy the car.
Oh, and I blew another tire out because of a vicious pothole, and another puncture because of bridge construction at the entrance to my street.
I also have been accumulating little dings over time associated with putting a wheelchair in and out of the cabin several times a day.
But, I’ve put that stuff behind me now and I’m calm again. Except for the daily W/C damage, which I will always have as long as I drive no matter what car I have, my baby is back to close to pristine, and I’m no longer heart sick. I’m loving it again on a daily basis. Your post makes me sad for you, and I want you to be able to get to the same place I am now, being able to enjoy driving a special car again. Of course, you do you, but I wanted you to know I understand how it feels.

I’m confused.
It’s a fun vehicle. You enjoy it. It’s clearly not a bland puddle of bland soup wrapped in bland packaging.
So occasionally there’s a bad day. Something happens, you look after it. It gives to you, you give back to it. It’s how you get to know each other. If it’s not perfect, it doesn’t need to stay perfect. You can actually drive it. You can let it live it’s intended life.

I had a 300ZX with absurdly good condition paint once. Some guy hit it in a car park and bailed, got quoted 1k to fix it. On a 10k car. Fuck living that life.
It lived with that scratch/dent
until the day I crashed it

Well, thank you. Seriously that helps a lot. I can feel a little hope. We'll see what happens after all the money, and the time it spends in shops. But I'm still aiming towards running away.

Have a shop remove the side skirt for paint. Drive the car while they did their thing (body shop time, a day/month lol). Almost no time with out the car, shouldn't be more than $300.

Yeah, this was my thinking before, and I really really want to believe it again. But it just feels like I may have to sacrifice more than I'm willing to just keep fighting for what may be. Thanks though, good to keep reading supporting thoughts like this.

This is very relatable. I love my 996; can’t believe I have it but whenever it’s getting needy I start searching BRZ/FRSes because I’m thinking “why do I have this car that just drives me nuts” but then when things are good; they’re really good. But my economic stakes are admittedly lower than yours.

I got one of those. Yeah it takes the wind out of you, but its not a show stopper. Most wouldn notice it. Shop around for good work to fix it and keep her rollin, maybe take the opportunity and look for updated side skirts.

One thing to consider if you ware flirting with getting rid of the car, anything you get repaired through insurance will go on the carfax record. Those records are not specific so when you go to sell it, it will read like an accident. This kills your resale value. Speaking from experience.
